Tai Chi

SiJeh Sherrilyn

The Chinese Martial Arts and Health Centre offers training in traditional Yang style Tai Chi Chuan.

Tai Chi is not just an exercise for calmness and relaxation - it is a complex and highly developed art. It gives the practitioner a feeling of enjoyment and satisfaction which goes beyond that offered by other forms of exercise. This is because Tai Chi movement is smooth, refined, elegant and creates balance of energies both internally and externally. The practitioner will eventually be able to use these energies in self defense.

Tai Chi uses the principle of soft against hard and weakness to defeat strength. The more one practices, the better one will become. The defensive capability will grow with age, instead of weakening. Because the martial theory of Tai Chi Chuan is complex it is difficult to comprehend and will take a longer period of time for the practitioner to reach martial capability than in harder styles such as Kung Fu.

There has recently been a large number of scientific studies done on the health benefits of Tai Chi practice many of which are only just being discovered and researched in western medicine. Tai Chi has been shown to:

Reduce Stress and anxiety
Speed heart attack recovery
Calm central nervous system
Increase breathing capacity

Slow the aging process
